I bet there are more of us than you would guess who have distinct
memories of rides on the PRCo *Jones* Cars!! You should have
seen the Dormont line in the PM rush -- ALL sorts of TrolleyCars,
PCCs AND Jones cars lined up All The Way Down The Hill, across
Biltmore, And Across Raleigh waiting to get into the wye to turn and
return to town or to the barn -- some of those ops could really handle
those cars and it was Absolutely Fascinating to watch them back out at
Not A Little Speed, throw the reverser while the car was still backing
and braking, and then head inbound down the hill and back to the barn.
.
Used to wait at Raleigh in the rush to watch for the One Jones car that
had a 2-spring vertical Trolley Base from a PCC instead of the 4-spring
horizontal. Loved the wood slatting on the floors in some of the
Jones cars although Mom balked at riding them because her Heels got
caught in the slats. Distinctly different sounds on a Jones car as
compared to a PCC and neat gear grind, but not objectionably loud.
.
Wheel tires on Jones cars seemed to have higher degree of polish than
wheels on the PCC - and more grease caked on the wheels as well!
Neat that the trolley catcher was lower than on a PCC And on a window
sill And that it was offset toward the right side instead of in the
center! Liked watching the op crank the destination sign to Car
House! Jones cars seemed to kick up more of a dust storm when the
op used the sander -- wonder if they did that just to amuse us kids
watching them?!?!
