By The Way -- The Above is Quite an Ambiguous observation which deals
with *-Perceptions-* which are greatly influenced by Not A Few
Factors -- I would imagine that performance specs might be quite
similar to a standard PCC. Problem is in Philly there really might
not be room to open them up and many of the operators are new to PCCs
and quite timid and intimidated by the PCCs as well.

It was strictly a Tongue In Cheek Forward which I couldn't resist. :-)

Reminds me of a fellow on the SF Muni list, Bob, now living in Oz, Very
Colorful and Very Fascinating. He adamantly defends his own
observations that the SF Muni 1101s, ex SLPS 1700s, were Infinitely
faster than any other Muni equipment and he had tested this and had
police clock him to verify his claims -- had one 1101 up to 55-mph on
Judah -- if you are At All Familiar With Judah -- it runs across the
short blocks, each one being 270-feet from curb to curb not including
the intersection -- possibility of Infinitely Too Much Cross Traffic
to even think of operating a PCC at such a speed. NO---WAY, Jose!

At any rate, in the same sentence he is claiming that these 1101s are
infinitely faster, he also says that he is following one of the 1016s
and couldn't keep up with it! He didn't have anything kind to say
about the Philly rebuilds operating here in SF -- skinny anemic
trolleycars not worth the effort in his opinion. But this goes
strictly to perceptions and not reality -- side by side these anemic
Philly PCCs, the 1101s, and the 1016s would perform almost identically
in acceleration and braking. Too bad we don't have 4-tracks on
Market any more or we could really make a test.

But outside of this information, Bob has some excellent observations and
very imaginative yet practical ideas. I really enjoyed his posts
but he has withdrawn from the lists for other pursuits. I took Bob
to task on this speed thing and we had a very good natured exchange --
but couldn't convince him to reconsider!
