The other state where full service is required by law is New Jersey.
The irony, Jim, is the first place I think I ever saw a self-service
pump, and we're going back to about 1972 with this, was in the state
of Oregon. Apparently it was briefly legal and then made illegal
again to protect the pump jockeys. But I recall one gas station /
general store that I found in the desert country probably southeast
of Walla Walla and before I went into Idaho.
Selbst Bedenung is self-service in German. I forget the
expression in French. In Switzerland the gas stations have currency
boxes on the pumps so you can get gasoline on Sunday when the gas
stations are closed. In France you can do it with a credit card but
ONLY WITH A CREDIT CARD REQUIRING PIN. I was on fumes one day
until I found a gas station open in northeastern France on a
Sunday. Pretty much only Oregon and New Jersey are the only places
in the developed world where pump jockeys do it for you.
