Concerning early 60s, I recall the new track in concrete on Second Ave. from 
10th St. to Brady St.  There was a comment - perhaps in Trolley Fare - that 
one more year would have seen the new trackwork extended to Greenfield.  And 
the 68 trackage on Brownshill Road was maintained - supposedly to continue 
the 55 cars after demise of Glenwood Bridge.

As for Fifth, there was new trackwork in Shadyside area.  I have some pic of 
"Mohawk" fantrip using the special work to get around construction.  And of 
course, as someone else noted, contempory transit agencies would just 
abandon rail service during construction.  Did it extend from about Highland 
- or perhaps Shady on Fifth to about Craig?????

But I was only a teen-ager at this time, so corrections appreciated
