Love the pictures, Jim. And recognize most of the locations.
Shame it doesn't show in the photos but if you see it up close and
personal, the Union Pacific shield is painted on the concrete
counterweights for the Steel Bridge. It's actually two separate
lift spans. The lower railroad span can be lifted independently of
the upper highway/LRT deck.

It's also one fantastic city which works. I've never quite
understood why. I think its a combination of the right politics and
the right demographics. But its about the only city I've been in
outside of Canada or Europe where I've seen 50,000 people downtown on
the 4th of July just being entertained. I'm amazed that it still
has downtown department stores with display windows. I can stay in
a hotel downtown. I can eat in restaurants in downtown Portland ...
good restaurants ... and ethnic places like Mexican or Moroccan.
Maybe I'll never understand entirely why Portland works but it's one
great city.

Never expected that from the resident cynic, did you Guys?

I like San Diego and Minneapolis and Toronto and Calgary and London
and Berlin and Paris too. And a whole host of small towns.
