What a unique concept.   Use transit to get to work?

Living in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I find this a unique concept.    
Somebody at PTM the other day told me I live in the country, and I  
pointed out that within one hour of my home live almost a million  
people and within ninety minutes are probably three or four million  
people and in the first two hours of the morning, the trains to  
Philly run about every 30 minute.   He was astounded.   All he could  
think of were Amish people working farms and driving buggies.

And yet what we are is really one massive suburb that stretches for a  
hundred miles west of Philadelphia.   The buses connect hospitals and  
shopping centers but not work sites.  I remember the transit  
managers, both from the authority and the private company before  
that, telling me that drivers would tell them that they would put a  
bus on to serve the Donnelly and Schick plants and they would get a  
new worker and that girl would ride the bus until she got her first  
or second pay check, and then she would have a car.

It's hard to sit here in these suburbs ... perhaps just as hard as to  
be in Ontario, California, or Palatine, Illinois, and think of using  
a bus to go to work.

And yet 50 years ago, I did it routinely.
