The night car system of 1960s focused on the old city of Toronto for the most lasted until the late 1980s when it was replaced by a new larger Blue Night network which covered all of what was then called Metro Toronto.

Subway lines are replaced at night by buses, as is now done in Philadelphia. But there has been talk of 24 hour subways in a few years after signal upgrades that would allow two way operation on a single stretch of track. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not from safety standpoint.

It's interesting that Boston has no owl or night service. MBTA rapid transit shuts down at midnight.
