Brake actuators have an indicator with three positions marked "OFF" (brake
released), "ON" (brake on) and "SET". When the pointer is very close or on
"SET", it indicates that the brake shoes require adjustment and the actuator
is at the end of its travel where the mechanical pull goes rapidly down. A
brief look at all actuators tells the operator if the drums are OK or not.
