We walked the trestles all the time. No walkways, but, we were told put your ear on the rail and you will hear if there is a car anywhere near. And this was pre-PCC fancy wheels days. One day I listened, heard nothing, and started across and up pops big red.  I guess it was an extra quiet 3800. 
Truthfully , I only walked #2 once, kind of scary to fat little me.

  I think Mark nailed it  --  I looked at the photo again and the walkway 
  along the left side of the trestle is Just Visible~!~!~!     Walkways 
  were unusual on TrolleyCar only trestles  --  wonder  Why  in this car is
