To Herr Schwindtler and others interested in route 86 East Liberty
Express:

Here's the poop on it:

Route 86 and 87 Ardmore were two separate routes going opposite
directions from East Liberty. Route 86 went from Penn and Highland,
East Liberty to "Dawntawn." In was established Dec. 3, 1906. In
Jan., 1923 route 86 was extended on the Paulson, Shetland, Larimer
loop in East Liberty. On August 6, 1928 it was rerouted over Penn,
Frankstown, Felicia and Braddock to Homewood. Nov. 30, 1928 cars
began to terminate at Frankstown Loop, Wilkinsburg.

Route 87 ran from East Liberty to Wilmerding in 1917 and was
shortened to Tioga Loop, Wilkensburg, to Wilmerding in 1930.

Then, effective August 22, 1937, route 86 was combined into 87 and
the route number 86 was abolished. On that date cars ran through
under the 87 number from Wilmerding to Downtown Pittsburgh.

What's interesting to me is it shows population and ridership shifts,
the declining importance of East Liberty vis a vis Wilkinsburg and
Forest Hills.
