I second this also. The book finds blame for everyone, and isn't
particular unfair about it, either.
I heard something interesting last week. It seems to be flawed, though.
Someone suggested J&L built new Open Hearths on the South Side as late as
they did because the union failed to grant work crew size concessions. The
person reported that the union was told fine, then we'll build OH
capacity, and when it becomes uneconomical, we'll close it.
Here's the thing. The BOF process (Linz-Donawitz, from Austria) dated from
1952, and that was *early*. McLouth had an early BOF which wasn't perfect
at the start.
J&L expanded on the South Side starting earlier. The new buildings were
going up in 1951.
Something like this may have happened, but not this, exactly.
