Those are known as "feeder cables." And you hit the nail on the head as to their purpose.

These quick snapshots, taken about ten minutes ago (of authentic Pittsburgh feeder cable insulators), show that some cables were two inches in diameter.

Some cables were a bit larger and I have some insulators for those, too, but they have been packed away since our move in early 2004.
