With Pittsburgh Railways Company this was called the "train number". Each route began numbering cars, sequentially, as they went into service on each route. For instance, the first car out on 42/38 would be Train Number 01, the second car going into service each day would be Train Number 02, and so on. Thus, the entire Train Number for the first 42/38 car out would be 3801, the second car out was 3802, and so on. Each operator had to enter the 'train number' on his/her "Day Card" (which was placed in their "Day Book") which had to be filled out at the end of each "half-trip" with the "Fare Register Reading" and the "Total Number of Passengers Hauled". I have old PRCo "day cards". PATransit kept things the same until 1978 with the exception that the "Train Number" was changed to "Block Number". After 1978 PATransit started using a computerized version of the "Day Card" (I also have these on hand) eliminating the need for the operator to fill in the entire run schedule each
day; only the 'register reading' and 'passengers hauled' had to be written in.
