I noticed on the Pittsburgh Board of Education web site that South
Vo-Tech High School is closed. The site also lists its previous name as
South High School, which is how I knew it in the 1960s. The older name,
South Side High School, must have gotten changed between 1923 and the
sixties. They should have kept the South Side name, because people
frequently confused South and South Hills.
Yes, South Hills was a block away from the right of way for the back
slope part of the Castle Shannon incline.
Someone mentioned the tripper 42 cars that would be waiting on the
siding at South Hills Junction when school let out at 3:05 PM. I rode
the 38 or 39 route to school. Those cars would come out of the tunnel
and be switched to that siding also.

The frieze calls it "South Side High School". It's been empty since the
2006-2007 school year. There's a picture including a sign to that effect
in the gallery with my neighborhood walk from last month.

And basically a block from the coal tunnel portal.
