There is not enough topographic relief (difference in elevation) to support
a tunnel under the highway here for taking coal out.  They would likely not
want to do that anyway, with the tipple directly across the street.

Do not know date of map but remember that north of Castle Shannon it was
originally Pittsburgh and Castle Shannon Railroad, a narrow gauge  
coal hauling railroad.   South of Castle Shannon the right of way  
was, I believe and EHL can confirm, part of the narrow gauge that  
became the B&O to Finleyville.   The spur is where the mine is at  
Washington Junction.   Suspect it was for removal of coal.
