We had a guy at work who was a foaming, rabid football fan, particularly a
49-ers fan.
He knew a few of us in the department were "motor heads", i.e., automobile
hobbyists. He used to tease us about it, "Cars, duh!", etc.
I finally told him I was no automotive design engineer, but I've swapped
engines, rebuilt some manual transmissions, rebuilt a few suspensions, brake
systems, carburetors, etc. I asked him how often he played for the NFL.
He shut his sorry mouth up after that, at least around me.
I used to play tackle football as a kid, but I could never get into watching
professional football. I wish my friends and relatives who are football fans
well. Maybe they don't understand my need to ride and photograph traction
equipment, buses, trackless trolleys, trains, or my desire to drag home a
derelict old vehicle, fix it up and drive it, but they know that's me.
My parents are in their eighties and still watch their favorite NFL, NBA and
Major League Baseball teams. I used to enjoy following college and pro
basket ball as well as professional baseball.
But I never got into the "mob mentality" of painting my face and chest in
team colors, sitting at the stadium or on the couch barking like a seal and
pumping my arm, cheering"my" team on.
Am I missing something? ;-)
