There are a lot of alleged southerners that, if you scrape them enough, are decended from 'yankees'.  And not just today. Such as Jerry in Jacksonville.
 
Philadelphia and New York were principal immigration ports, a natural migration route was down the Shenandoah Valley.  The Ohio River was another migration route.  The first generation might have settled in  New England, New Jersey or Pennsylvania, and second, third or fourth generation looked for more 'elbow room'.  There were a lot of cousins on both sides during the civil war.  A former 1st Sgt. told the story of a proper Southern women who didn't want to talk about the old family tombstones with births listed in Pennsylvania.  Make that the really old ones from early 19th century.  The not so old tombstones from mid 19th century were ok.
