[PRCo] Re: Snow Pictures

This reminds me of my first encounter with, and knowledge of, a snow
sweeper. Big snow that got packed down on the sidewalk. Our whole family
spent hours scraping and shoveling the whole front walk. That sweeper must
have been waiting around the corner for us to finish though because as we
were admiring our work it was returned in triplicate. That thing just threw
this icy mess all over the sidewalk, up against the house, and into the
yard, I probably got it all over my back as well. I think we just went into
the house and prayed for a meltdown.

I wish I had a letter that was floating around my darkroom for
years. It came from Norman Vutz, who was then the museum director
at PTM (or PERC in those days). He enclosed a picture of a sweeper
just after it came out of Craft Avenue and turned onto 5th Avenue or
Forbes Avenue from Craft or Halket. It was throwing snow and
burying the parked automobile with vengeance.

I remember Norm writing that the picture "was hardly indicative of
the system wide performance." I remember he concluded by saying
that overall the Railways Company's battle with its final snow storm
in 1964 reminded him of a "Three Stooges Comedy" because nearly every
piece of equipment burnt out or failed.
