The fish do quite well in the cold waters of Lake Erie. The water on
Superior Avenue was (and still is) deep enough to allow the fish to swim
freely in that three block area. The street was closed to traffic when a
giant sink hole filled with water opened up at East 74 and swallowed the
street, two street lamps, and the entrance to No. 24 fire station.
The lake is actually at 35F today. It's still has open waters and ocean
going ships are still coming into the harbor assisted by the smaller lake
ships (still quite large) with ice breaker bows. (Cleveland-Cliffs Lines
sends out the ice breaker ships each Winter like PRCo used to send out
streetcars with ice cutters.)
Morning temp today was 4F with a windchill of minus -12F. Todays high was
15F. We have a Winter Storm WARNING for tomorrow evening and night with 5 to
10 inches snow expected. We have over 12 inches of snow on the ground now.
The family living in the apartment under mine have two cats which they let
out into the fenced back yard some mornings. A few days ago their cats
jumped into the foot deep snow and could not get out. The guy had to come
out and pull the cats out of the snow. I haven't seen those cats outside
since.
Here the fire hydrants have 5 foot tall rods attached vertically with a red
and white flag at the top. This tells the fire engine drivers where the
hydrants are located since the hydrants become covered with snow when the
plow trucks go by. I even have road-salt speckled living room windows caused
by the snow plows flying down Harvard Avenue at top speed throwing snow,
salt, and slop everywhere. I live on the second floor. BTW, Cleveland has
had over 30 inches of snow for January, 2009 so far.
So, yes................I'm not in Florida any longer.
