Here's what some friends do on extended air trips: they check into a hotel 
near the airport the day before their departure, then the next day take the 
hotel shuttle to the airport, leaving their car in the hotel garage until 
they return.  This wouldn't be an economical choice for a 10-day trip on 
Amtrak, but regardless of cost, I'd be more concerned about security at the 
garage.
