A turkey on the cover of this issue shouts: "Hurrah."
The caption underneath: "Says Mr. Turkey:
'So This is No-Accident Month.'"

SAFETY FIRST MEANS

"That a man shall live to enjoy the fruits of his labor;
that his mother shall have the comfort of his arm in her age;
that his wife shall not be untimely a widow;
that his children shall have a father,
and that cripples and helpless wrecks who were once
strong men shall not longer be a by-product of the industry."

BETTER BRAKES WEEK

Better Brakes Week, conducted by the Safety Council...
brought out this:
It is said that approximately 170,000 motor vehicles are in
operation in Allegheny County today. If this is true, it means
that 51,000 motor vehicles are traveling our streets each
day with brakes that can not pass the Test; or, 51,000
potential accidents due to faulty brakes alone.
The estimates were based on tests, which showed that
approximately 31 per cent of the cars examined
were rejected.

WAR WITH DEATH

Accidents happen. Yet slowly, surely, inevitably the numbers
of them are decreasing. Accident-proof appliances have
been established wherever needs were discovered. Some
of the recent safety devices placed in service by the Prc are:

Electric track switches, which tend to greater safety by making
it unnecessary for trainmen to leave the trollies and throw
the switches. They aid the passenger because they tend
to faster operation of the cars. Similar to these are electric
derail switches, which produce like benefits.

Automatic signals have benefits the same as the switches,
and the additional one of being less liable to error than
manually operated ones.

Stop lights signal to vehicles following, and operate when
the motorman throws off power.

A new and improved type of fender has been installed which
will prevent a person or object being run over by the
trucks of the cars.

Automatic flashing signals at Craft Avenue yard and
Thirtieth street warn pedestrians that a car is about to
turn at these points.

Automatic spacing signals have been introduced in
some sections, keeping cars a reasonable distance apart.

The berthing signal at Third avenue allows the approach
of cars on Smithfield street to be known, and thus saves
the milling and jamming that might occur here.

Road crossing signals on the interurban routes,
adoption of safety zones in co-operation with the City,
buzzer signal for trailers, which eliminated the old
bell signal, and automatic window cleaners, which enable
the motorman to see on rainy days, are among some
other safety measures.

Head of the House (angrily)--"Who told you to put
that paper on the wall?"
Decorator--"Your wife, sir."
Head of the House--"Pretty, isn't it?"
Been there?

-------
It was a charity ball and a couple of young women were
holding an indignation meeting over a third one.
"Here we are," remarked one of the girls, "selling
kisses to raise money and she's bootlegging them
free back of the booth!"
