Unusual 88 Frankstown, 87 Ardmore and 77/54 re-routings during Strip District Penn Avenue disruption, June 1964. If I understand this one correctly, the 87 Ardmore stayed on Liberty Avenue inbound instead of turning onto Penn Avenue at 32nd Street. In the Railways heydays, one wonders if the Railways Company would have just built a temporary railbed to get cars from Penn to Liberty during this time.

Mr.Barry;
Very fascinating finds. Actually, the 88 becomes 'like' an 87
inbound when it turns in E.Liberty to Euclid then to Center
where the 87 line operates. Both use Liberty IB to 23rd.
Between 31st or 30th and 25th/24th is single track; double
track exists here on Liberty west to 'about' 20th to allow
for this special maneuver and return to Penn doesn't it.
It would be interesting to know how single-track operations
were accomplished. Inspectors in trucks could be
stationed on either end to use their radio for this purpose.
It seems very logical to use available trackage; to construct
special track and overhead around this obstacle 'may' take
longer than the detour lasted.
Phil
