Those poles are on the Waterfront Line. They were installed in 1995/1996 and
were a dull red at that time. Fourteen lakefront Winters later they have
weathered into that shade of pink. They do need to be repainted. I would not
look for repainting until the recession/depression eases.
The coupler covers have always been around. We have a fairly new Rail
District Director who is actually very good and knows how the rail transit
industry should operate. He has ordered all rail cars (light and heavy) to
have their coupler covers in place when the coupler is not being used. This
keeps the many contacts free from dirt, water, and rust. They first ordered
blue covers for the light rail cars and black covers for the heavy rail
cars. Now, everything is getting orange (safety-glow orange to be exact)
covers so they can be seen better in the yard and at night.
Downtown is pretty alive now days. The "Warehouse District" is the club,
restaurant, bar (all upscale) area. This area also has scores of condos and
apartment buildings. It is roughly the area North from Superior Ave to the
Waterfront and bounded on the East by West 3rd and on the West by West 9th.
This area is always active day and night, seven days a week. The "Civic
Center District" tends to have a 7am to 7pm crowd. This is from Superior
north to the Waterfront and West 3rd, east to East 13th. All government
operations and buildings are here for city, county, state and federal
governments. A lot of nice, old "neo-classic" type buildings in this
area. The "Theater District" is very alive all the time. This is the area
from Prospect Ave, north to Chester and from East 9th, east to East 17th.
There are ten (yes 10) legitimate theaters such as the Palace, Allen, State,
Hanna, 14th Street, Ohio and four smaller ones. None of these are motion
picture theaters, all are stage production theaters. This area also has many
restaurants and bars for the before and after crowd. Again, lively day and
night. The "Financial District" is a 9 to 5 area and is north and south on
East 9th from Lakeside to Prospect. A large residential development is now
being built in the area along and several blocks east of East 12th
from Superior, north to Lakeside. Existing apartment buildings are south of
Superior on East 12th all the way to Euclid Avenue. The "Quadrangle" is the
Cleveland State University area from East 17th, east to East 30th and north
and south from Payne Ave to Prospect. Lively day and night. The bars/clubs
are the young crowd. Of course Public Square, Euclid Avenue, Prospect Avenue
and the area up to East 9th have lots of restaurants, bars, clubs and is
lively on weekend nights, especially East 4th St. Also over twenty large
residential building along Euclid and Prospect Many "high end" restaurants
are in the Tower City complex and all of the downtown motion picture
theaters are in Tower City Center. And don't forget the many, many trolley
and interurban cars parked in the unused tunnels in the Terminal Tower
subway.
So the point to all this is, come back and see what has happened and what is
happening.
