The original, of course, was Oliver Perry's report "We have met the enemy and they are ours: two ships, two brigs, one schooner, and one sloop." tendered to General (later President) Harrison after Perry's victory over the British on Lake Erie in the War of 1812.

As I recall, the saying as beaten about here had its origin in one of the Pogo strips published in the 1950's. Can't remember any of the context although it may have been one of the constantly changing mottoes on the side of the little scow Pogo was wont to pole around the swamp.

I at one time had a collection of Pogo books. In that era I also spent a lot of time on the 42 Dormont car, however I don't think I ever read any of the Pogo books while riding on any PRC car.
