There are some things that just can't be "splained".  

I went to the search page and entered Stanwix.  The 5th thumbnail on the
first page shows a forties photo without the sign.   Ray's photo is in the
3rd page.  A better photo of the sign on the 4th page is titled Duff's
College.  On that same page is another shot, "Art Institute", showing the
sign that appears to be cleaned of signage.  This one is 1937.
