Thousands were in Connellsville for the end of West Penn. The party-goers litterally tore Virginia Electric and Power apart on the last night. Lancaster had a car full going to an amusement park on the last trip out at 11 PM ... No room to pick up the people coming back.
I think it was common in the United States to see huge crowds on the last day.
But when was the last time we really had a last night in the United States? El Paso in the early 1970s was yanked away under cover of darkness by the Mexicans. Do we have to go back to St. Louis in the 1966, Chicago in 1958, Illinois Terminal in 1958, Dallas in 1956, Brooklyn in 1956, Cleveland in 1954, Milwaukee in 1958 ... I don't know what happened there.
But a lot of those shutdowns in the 1930s and 1940s were like losing an old friend.
