In the mid-60's after the 77/54 line was abandoned, the roadway on the 16th St. Bridge was replaced, and the rail was removed.  However, they left short sections of rail that were attached to the bridge expansion joints. As the new pavement wore down , the ends of those rail sections didn't deteriorate, making for a bumpy ride across the bridge. Sometime later the roadway was replaced again, along with the expansion joints and the  remaining rail.

Subject: [PRCo] remaining rails
While biking across the 10th St Bridge Saturday, I noticed some rail
visible along the edge of a pothole in the south approach.
No picture. I remember the 10th St Bridge had deck work before I got
my license and I assume the rails there are gone, but I guess
based on this they're left at both ends.
