FYI, the tracks which continued across Grant (on Fourth) to Ross, then left
on Ross to left on Forbes and back to Grant were still active and for a
while in the mid/late 1970s was used by 49-Arlington-Warrington cars during
the evening hours. The layover was on Forbes at Grant. This layover became
a hotbed of unrest between East End bus operators and those of us taking
the recovery time on Forbes at Grant with a PCC car. One night I informed a
bus operator who was sitting behind the trolley honking the bus horn that,
"...the steering wheel was put in the bus for a reason, us it."
At Fourth and Grant cars could operate straight ahead on Fourth or take the
switch to the right onto Grant Street. At Forbes and Grant both the left
and right switches and tracks were active. The first switch was electric
and would operate for either "right" or "straight". The second switch was
plugged (welded) open for the left curve. The tracks going straight on
Forbes ended right after the switch set for left only.

The 49 downtown routing during these hours was:
Inbound Smithfield St Bridge
Continue Smithfield
Right Fourth Av
Left Ross St
Left Forbes Av
Right Grant St
Left Liberty
Left Wood
Left Fort Pitt Blvd
Right Smithfield St Bridge
to regular route
