[PRCo] LSE Freight

Fred
That is not the story I have always been told.
The gospel as related to me is that the LSE freight handlers went out on strike and rather than negotiate, Fred Coen just shut the whole thing (freight operation) down. C&LE tried to salvage the Cleveland business by interlining with Norwalk, but the latter could not maintain the schedules that LSE had done routinely, and the business dried up for C&LE, thus prompting the abandonment of their Springfield-Toledo line later that year (Coen axed the freight operation in May).
So, while it is true that Norwalk was the successor to (at least some of) LSE's freight operation, they were not the immediate cause of its demise.
If Dennis has any contradiction or augmentation to this, hopefully he will speak up.
Dwight

Youse (Yins) are making me feel old. I was working the night shift for a local trucking company (Norwalk Truck Lines … the outfit that wiped out Lake Shore Electric's freight business) so I was sleeping when it happened. Television was off. The Turkey Hill ice cream route man came to the door and told us.
So you were 11ish … I was 23 and Derrick was minus 10. My real memories go back to Harry Truman and I was living during Roosevelt's last two terms in office.

The three fifth grade classes were in the cafeteria/gymnasium for an assembly program when the secretary of the school came to the door and whispered to the teachers. They began crying and I remember being sent home. We watched through the Monday funeral. I was taken with the bands playing the hymns & dirges plus the associations with the Lincoln assassination. I have always been a Lincoln fan and a fan of hymns played by a band. I live in the same home where I watched.
