Back in the early 60s (before PAT) especially obnoxious if one had to be in the proximity of the rear of a Brentwood Murder Lurch “coal burning” bus!

The south portal of the Liberty Tubes was rated so deadly because it was so
detrimental to the health of the guys who had to work there. Can you
imagine breathing the exhaust of all those cars all day on top of the normal
city pollution.
This reminds me of a stunt I pulled that I'll bet none of you were dumb
enough to do - I rode my bike through the Tubes one day. We'll I think I
walked it most of the way. It was back when they still had a sidewalk about
three feet above the roadway so I was not in the traffic. It still scared
the crap out of me.
