Ah, the days when the white tile walls were covered with black exhaust soot and one out of every three sodium vapor lamps on the ceiling had burned out. 
  
The best feature of the Liberty Tunnels was AM radio reception inside the tubes. During the tunnel improvement project in the mid-1970's, Tydings Co., the electronics distributor on Liberty Ave., had the contract to install a new antenna system in the tunnels.

Back in the early 60s (before PAT) especially obnoxious if one had to be in the proximity of the rear of a Brentwood Murder Lurch “coal burning” bus!

The south portal of the Liberty Tubes was rated so deadly because it was so 
detrimental to the health of the guys who had to work there.  Can you 
imagine breathing the exhaust of all those cars all day on top of the normal 
city pollution. 

This reminds me of a stunt I pulled that I'll bet none of you were dumb 
enough to do - I rode my bike through the Tubes one day.  We'll I think I 
walked it most of the way.  It was back when they still had a sidewalk about 
three feet above the roadway so I was not in the traffic.  It still scared 
the crap out of me.
