Hi, Ray,
I'm not certain that I really know the exact procedure they used. It would
have been to relieve pressure so springs could be easily removed and
replaced.
As to question 2, I have no idea! They might have used the motors for the
open car, but again I'm not certain. Nor do I know the whereabouts of the
old truck...probably out back of the TDB.
Sorry to be so unhelpful; I'm not at the museum campus much these days and
don't follow all the goings-on. My bailiwick is the Archive, and my time
eve there has been severely limited over the last several years due to
renewed consulting work.
Ed

Hello Ed.
What may I ask do you mean by "and was used to compress PCC trucks for
spring replacement"
Just curious, what condition is the 3800 truck in?
Thanks
Ray

Those are shop trucks from low-floor cars. The 3800s had roller bearings.
One 3800-car truck survived the scrapping of the fleet and was used to
compress PCC trucks for spring replacement. PTM acquired it from Homewood
in the '70s.

List
Take a look at the shot of the burnt out remains of 1600 in Bear's current
eBay listing. What are those trucks? Obviously not belonging to 1600. So,
are they shop trucks or are they trucks from a 3800 series car, all of which
supposedly scrapped by end of 1952?
