Picking pockets on crowded PATransit buses and trolleys was still going on
in the 1970s and 80s. Several times I had passengers come up and tell me
someone had tried to pick their pocket. It always seemed to be within 4 or
5 feet of either side of the center doors. So if I received a complaint I
would always make a general announcement to the bus or car, "watch your
wallets and purses.....pickpockets near the center doors". The innocent
would always stay put while the "actors" would quickly move away from the
center door area and usually leave at the next stop. At least I could keep
an eye on them until they did get off the vehicle.
