[PRCo] A trip down memory lane for Grateful Fred...

My father took Doug and me to our first major league game, at Forbes Field, in October 1951. Pirates vs. Dodgers, Preacher Roe pitching for the Dodgers and Murray Dickson for the Pirates. Dodgers won 3-1. Next day I went back to Pittsburgh and rode last days of Rts 17 and 20 and the Mt. Oliver Incline. Still have very vivid memories of all events mentioned.

Don’t ask me what happened yesterday.

I did for the first nine years … we left in 1949. I came back every year after that but only for a visit to Grandma.

In my youth, I remember the Lone Ranger, the Railroad Hour, Fibber Magee, the Great Gildersleeve and other radio shows … stations KQV, KDKA when it was an NBC affiliate.

But the Pirates. My eddicahun was neglected. My father was not into sports. He took me to a game at Forbes Field once … I suspect someone gave him a couple of free tickets. Nothing was explain to me so it was one of the most boring events in an eight year old's life. Perhaps, had I grown up in a house where you listened to all the games, it might have meant something. But I grew up with the Metropolitan Opera on the radio every Saturday.

But the old man did some good for me … took me places like Glenwood, 24th St., North Bessemer to look at all those puffer bellies lined up in rows. And when the my mother was waiting in the doctor's office with my sister, dad would be killing time with me trackside in Swissvale or Wilkinsburg.
