[PRCo] Signal styles

I've been commuting by rail and have noticed at least two distinct style of signal, color-light-clear-on-top on the red line and position-light-clear-on-bottom near south hills junction. Are there others? Are these historical accidents of who installed them or is there some significants to the type of display?
