[PRCo] ({[pat]}) Paint Schemes

Good Morning!!

Enclosed are *some* (by NO means ALL) gleanings from PTM//PRMA
~Trolley--Fare~ from 1964--1970 concerning the painting of ({[pat]})
equipment, but it starts with 1970 and works back.
Also enclosed somewhere within this listing is the reason for one cream
and one red dash light on 1697, a question poised by Ken, I
believe!<GGGGGG>
And as mentioned earlier, until ({[pat]}) had determined what
equipment it was responsible for, many cars were touched up with PRCo
paint as opposed to being painted in ({[pat]}) gray colors!

>From ~Trolley Fare~ of June--1967

"PAT started to paint cars following the collision of 1743 with 1459.
The idea was to try three different levels of work, have the board
inspect and select one level for application to many of the remaining
car fleet. First PAT spent $3,000 to refurbish 1743s exterior, later
1749 and 1711 were painted. 1749 cost $1,000 for a paint job, while
1711 had a complete rebuild including new upholstery for $6,000. 1755
was next getting the medium price job and with the passing of the East
End it looked as if at least 30 cars would get painted. All as the
first three in a new paint scheme with a gray roof. Since these
auspicious beginnings there has been a steady decline in the
workmanship, poorer bodywork, noticeable spraymarks and OH! back to the
old habits of painting right over dirt and rust. 1746 recently emerged
looking very sloppy, at this rate the end of this painting program can't
come too soon."

SCRAPPING -- from ~Trolley Fare~

complete at that time. The 54 cars cut up to the time of that writing
are listed in that issue and the information below completes the job:"

"The 1967 Scrapping Program
"As was briefly detailed in our last issue, the junk list due to the
East End 'busting' will be extensive; 90 PCC cars and 9 work cars. They
are as follows:"

"It's pretty obvious that there's going to be a shortage of GE-equipped
PCCs around Pgh. in the future, in fact they'll be but one, M1276 which,
somehow, escaped the scrap list. There will also be but one 1400
remaining, WABCos 1467, which is due for further test operation next
spring and should be around for several more years at least."
"There's a move afoot in the PRMA to preserve the M37. 1547, which was
to have gone to Minneapolis, is included in the scrap list. 1770 and
1774, wrecked last summer, will be scrapped in spite of relatively mild
damage, particularly on the 1770. Things like this just might lead one
to believe (if he were not too perceptive) that PAT didn't care for rail
transit. But we all know that isn't true now, don't we???....., WELL,
DON'T WE!!!!"

>From ~Trolley Fare~ Sept/Oct--1966
	Random Notes.

"During the morning rush on Wednesday, August 17, cars 1770 and 1774
met head-on on the 42/38 line near the Castle Shannon end of the line.
._._. one car was loading passengers when the other rounded a blind
curve and hit it. Damages were apparently none too severe and it's
highly likely that they two cars will be repaired."

"Dash lights have been removed from 1616 and 1740."

"The demise of 1408 leaves not a single car in the original 1936 paint
scheme. Only 1602 retains the original style red front, but the roof of
the car has been repainted solid cream."

"By the way, Sunday service after Labor Day in Pittsburgh will be
provided by just 14 streetcars."

"Remember the 'V-front' paint scheme so popular just a few years
ago? There are now just 16-cars painted that way that are still
active. The green--on--white safety slogan signs which PRCo applied to
about 32 cars: Those are down to 14-active cars. One might think PAT
is trying to cover up the existence of PRCo?"

"Although the GE 1600s are getting the ax, 4 remain in service. 1697
presently has one dash light painted red and one painted white. It,
being the only simplified car to retain its dash lights, had them
painted red to match the rest of the belt rail. One got busted, hence
the white replacement. 1686 *was* the only V-front with dash lights."
