I'm having trouble envisioning carbon-steel, and the 1500s were gone by
the time I was old enough... I assume the gray wasn't a good match for the
underlying metal?
And now to ramble arguably off-topic:
http://www.all-railroads.com/instock/hoelectr.htm
A (non-brass) HO scale model of the Electroliner, to be produced if
there's sufficient demand. Why might it be on-topic? They went from the
North Shore to Philly, where they were Liberty Liners. Wrong end of the
state.
Then one went to IRM and the other is at Orbisonia, which is arguably
western PA. Very arguably.
I'm going to get one. I'm a sucker for (models of) high speed
trainset-type equipment.
One might wonder slightly why we never had anything like that or even the
Bullets at this end of the state. Where would they have gone?? There were
no real high-speed rights of way, and if there had been, I guess the
Charleroi line would have been the only line with the density to support
it, if you look far enough back.
So why didn't we see that kind of investment here? No one was that crazy.
