Your right, Ed.
Yes, 64 had a couple places where signals were used at non-clearance curves.
One was in Wilkinsburg where 64 curved onto Kelly to get under PRR and
Pennwood St. My barbershop was at this location and I would watch cars
wait.
At least one - maybe more in North Braddock near Liberty St. Remember
waiting outbound on a car for an inbound 64 car to clear.
On Talbot St. in Rankin, there were signals for short "S" curve - vague
recollection that route 67 went into single track here.
Didn't ride 67 enough to know if additional "NC" signals were located in
Swissvale. Fred's comment in another post about what 14 year olds did not
notice is well taken.
Quick scan of some Transportation Department Orders:
#2343: Operation of Spacing Signals on outbound main line track in Tunnel
Yard between Mt. Washington Junction and Way Department Crossing
#2349: Operation of Spacing Signals as protection for Road Crossing
outbound on Ardmore Boulevard at Yost and Rockwood Streets.
#1214A: Operating instructions routes 35, 36, 37. Starts with discription
of "Absolute Permissive Block Continuous Track Circuit Signals."
Mentions that the five blocks of A.P.B. signals between Boggs Stop and Oak
Station are equipped with preferential signaling.
Discussion continues with "Track Circuit type spacing signals"
#2299: Instructions governing operation of cars through single track blocks
controlled by Nachod Type C car counting signals.
NOTE: I wonder if #2299 above applied to route 49 signals?? Perhaps also
Drake, 38A and 62. I dunno.
I could not find any reference to operating past NC curves. Also gap
between # 2343 and 2349 is interesting. Wonder what they were??
