Good Evening, Everyone:
It was 44 years ago October 15 when Pittsburgh PCC 1038 on the
"87-Ardmore" line in the Strip District smashed a tractor-trailer
broadside and the result was 20 injured passengers. Others were
severely jolted. Police said the crash was so violent; they
were amazed no one was killed. The trolley was knocked off its
tracks by the impact of the crash at Penn Avenue and 27th Street
and was carried by its own momentum into the side street.
Despite a badly smashed foot, the operator escaped with minor
injuries. Almost every window in 1038 was broken. Inspector
Albert Jones said the truck, loaded with freight, was crossing
Penn Avenue on 27th Street when the collision occurred shortly
before noon. As a result, 1038 went on the next scrap list.
PRCo. scrapped 45 PCC's during the summer of 1959. (The
intersection is a right-angled intersection).
From HEADWAY RECORDER, November, 1959, page N-10, second
paragraph.
Very Sincerely,
Dennis M. Linsky
