Art is an enigma to me ... a year ago when he had his 88th birthday
they posed him balanced on a highway guard rail next to a route 88
sign! Now he is 89 and still working as an instructor, a
photographer, a store employee and the museum patriarch.
I first met Art more than 40 years ago when I showed up unannounced
at the "Pittsburgh Electric Railway Club." He invited me over for
dinner and then pulled out 8mm movies of Boston and Los Angeles for
me to enjoy. Imagine it guys. Movies of brand spanking new Los
Angeles Railway PCCs in two-tone yellow in 1940 or 1941!
And Art isn't a man who is stuck in the mud either. Sunday night he
asked if I wanted to go to dinner with him. I asked how he felt
about Mexican and he said he could go for that. When we walked in
to the restaurant, he looked at the girl who was obviously Mexican
and said to her in Spanish, "Dos."
Long may the king reign.
