I saw an explanation of the "Steelers Nation", of which I am a proud member.
When the steel mills began closing in the early eighties we left to find
jobs and scattered all over the country. (I thought we left because the
Steelers quit winning) But we never lost our love for da 'burgh and all the
things that make it special. Now our offspring are moving back there taking
high-tech jobs and becoming Steelers fans themselves. But, the article
said, we would never go back - we are stuck out here in nowhere land.

How true is that? It applies to me - I came east in 1982, got married, had
a daughter who went to Pitt Engineering and is now working for Penn Dot and
living in Squirrel Hill. Go figure and go Steelers.

I, too, was fortunate that after Vietnam and graduate school the job I
took was in Atlanta. I can't imagine what trouble I would have had if I
had returned to Pittsburgh. (Even though I loved the place.)

......

I liked the area then. Looking back, I think my father, without
realizing how lucky he was, made a rather fortunate move from a job
in Ambridge to a job in Lancaster. He might have hung in there but
he did a lot better where he moved.
