Further to the exodus:

I left when I interviewed at PAT in 1972, was told that there was a hiring freeze, but then asked if I would mind if my resume was sent to PennDOT. (isn't that what happens at all job interviews??? (:>) Have been 'homesteading' ever since. And it was a fortunate decision. Otherwise, would not have met my wife, nor been in position to enjoy 27 years in the reserves.

There have been some fleeting thoughts about returning to Pgh after retirement, but only fleeting. PTM (both as hobby but more so people connection) would be the only attraction. A lot will depend on what the legislature does with cost of living in this state, and there is a certain appeal of warmer climates. I can just as easily watch the Steelers in the (warm) comfort of our home.

As for job opportunities, they are out there. Any interest or knowledge about rail car wiring? SEPTA has several maintenance positions to fill that go up to around $25 per hour. Red Rose is also looking for drivers. So is SEPTA. Drivers have become difficult positions to fill.

Also a need for people in the medical field. What's on the horizon is the baby boom generation hitting 63 this year. Also, haven't seen any mention about what consumer's are doing with their credit card debt. (recent article seemed to imply that the public was paying down their debt latter part of 2008, but need more info) And the shortfall in the highway trust fund NOT due to reduction in people's driving habits. It's due to reduced truck sales according to recent article in one of the Pittsburgh papers. This would imply a 'spin' on propaganda out of Washington so as not to offend the trucking industry.

Back to important issues. The Steeler game is the late game on Sunday. Go Steelers!

Cheers
John
