That's right.  And it is also why the switch iron's handle was not a closed 
loop--it could be used by the operator to "grab" the trolley rope and pull 
it down to where it could be grasped by hand.

The exception was the retrievers on the interurban-equipped PCCs, which were 
located below the openable back window so that the operator could control 
the rope from within the car should it dewire at a spot inhospitable to 
outside attention, such as a trestle.
