[PRCo] Not traction

I still have the flyer from the 5/30/57 B&O fantrip to the Foxburg switchback. Attached are two scans of the complete flyer.  Note that because of track length limits on the switchback, the train consisted of only four coaches and the gondola. Also attached is a photo of a B&O EM-1 taken at New Castle Jct. when the fantrip stopped there. This photo was taken by Pete Roehm who was a member of PERC in the late 1950's and early 60's. The Foxburg trip was diesel powered, but the B&O Akron Division was still operating steam in 1957.

Yeah, we rode over it (in open gon) on the May 1957 PERC trip to North Clarion Jct. via Foxburg.  Nice shots of current day situation. 

I’m amazed that that turntable is still extant.  Phillipston was a point on the planned “low grade” freight cutoff through East Brady that never was finished. It would have avoided the grades and congestion west of Altoona (Horseshoe Curve-Gallitzin-Cresson, etc.)  PRR spent so much money on the new station in New York City and its associated tunnels and such that there was insufficient money left to complete the cutoff, which had been championed by Samuel Rea.  One can only imagine what might have been had this work been finished.

I wandered around north of my place yesterday. I am sure Dwight recognizes the trestles near Chicora on the old B&O.The turntable is at Phillipston on the Allegheny Valley Branch of the PRR.The last views give you a small glimpse of what is to come in a few weeks at Brady's Bend Overlook.
